Interest in the Aaliyah Barbie is truly "one in a million" - and it shows because the doll has already sold out.
The doll was released on Thursday, which would have been the late R&B star's 46th birthday. As of Thursday afternoon, the collection was listed as sold out on Mattel's website.
"It's Aaliyah's birthday and Barbie is paying tribute to the R&B princess' unparalleled legacy as a once-in-a-lifetime talent," the Barbie Instagram account said Thursday of the latest addition to the Barbie music family.
"Aaliyah Barbie is a rising star who has left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, remembered for her signature style and keeping her influence alive for generations to come," the post said.
Inspired by her outfit in the "One in a Million" music video, the photo shows Doll wearing a sleeveless faux leather tank top, a black faux leather crop top and silver-embellished pants. It also came with her signature black aviator sunglasses and armbands to complete the look.
Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, who worked closely with Mattel to bring the doll to life, said he was "shocked" by the results. He told TODAY that his sister would love the edgy ensemble, noting that her favorite color is "all black."
"It's still tight; it's still a little sexy. But it's pants, so it brings power, confidence and expression," Horton said. "It actually checks all the boxes of what my sister represents and what Barbie represents, which is empowerment and expression."
The product will initially be available to 59 members of Mattel's Barbie Club, priced at $55. Target will release the doll on January 26 for $55.99, giving fans another chance to get their hands on this popular product.
Other dolls in the music collection include dolls of Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks.
Aaliyah's second album, ""One in a Million" was certified double platinum within a year of its August 1996 release. She also received Grammy nominations for hits such as "Are You That Somebody" and "Try Again."
She died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001 at the age of 22. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing eight other people on board.
Mattel said in the doll's listing: "Aaliyah's smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape '90s R&B, and her impact on music and fashion continues today. Our tribute to 'Babygirl's' life and voice will Make any series a top notch" chart. "
