New Orleans Prison Escape Update

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry plans to hold a 5 p.m. press conference with law enforcement agencies to provide the latest news from the search.

At least one escaped prisoner was captured according to public prompts, according to a statement by the FBI on social media platform X. In addition to earning $2,000 in ATF and $5,000 from Crimestoppers, the reward for information captured from ATF increased to $5,000 in ATF.

Who is the escaped prisoner?

The men range from 19 to 42 years old and face a variety of charges, including aggravated assault, domestic abuse, assault and murder. New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick warned that the fugitive was dangerous at a Friday night press conference but also urged the public to "not panic."

A man who is still a whole person is identified as Derrick Groves.

Groves, 27, was arrested in 2018 for Jamar Robinson and Byron Jackson, according to CBS branch WWL-TV. At least two members of Robinson's family told WWL-TV that they were hiding behind Groves' escape.

One of the family members told the news station: "We don't know what will happen, we don't know how Derrick Groves feels... if he will come for us, we don't know."

They also said the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office had not contacted them at any time after the escape.

The Sheriff’s Office identified Robert Moody as one of the escapees Friday, who was recaptured after a prompt to the crime action.

Authorities said the other two were Dkenan Dennis, 24, and Kendell Myles, 20. They were rebooked and charged with simple escape, according to the sheriff's office.

How did New Orleans prisoners escape?

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said the men were able to leave the Orleans Justice Center because of the “flawed locks.” Hutson said she has been constantly worried about the lockdown of officials until she advocated money to repair the elderly infrastructure this week.

Hutson said Friday that there was “no way” for prisoners to escape the facility.

The prisoner was found missing during a regular head count at Orleans Parish Prison at 8:30 a.m. local time, according to the sheriff’s office. They are believed to have escaped sometime after midnight.

The sheriff said that at about 12:23 a.m., the prisoners tugged at the sliding cell on the track and at 1:01 a.m., they left the prison behind a wall behind the toilet.

Photos provided by authorities show what they are talking about are clean cuts on metal rods behind toilets in prison cells.

The sheriff said the toilet and bolts were removed with toilet items, but did not specify what the items were. The prisoner then scales the wall downward and crosses the interstate.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office released a security video on Friday night about the extraordinary escape, which showed inmates rushing out of the prison and crossing the highway.

The escaped prisoners also recruited obscene information for the guards. One was misspelled and said "easy, lol."
