After more than 15 months of fighting, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage agreement, giving families hope that their loved ones will soon be able to return home.
In the first phase of the deal, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages over six weeks - starting with the release of three hostages on Sunday. Israel said it would release 1,900 Palestinians from Israeli prisons as part of this phase.
The list of 33 people released from Gaza includes men, women and children, ranging in age from 1 to 86 years old. Two of them are U.S. citizens and some others hold European citizenship.
They were mainly among the 250 people captured during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the Gaza War. Many were abducted from kibbutz communities and techno music festivals near the Palestinian enclave. Two people on the list of 33 were arrested in the years before the war.
Due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, a Hamas official confirmed the identities of the 33 hostages in an interview with NPR. In the list below, their ages and other backgrounds are based on information shared by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, a group representing relatives of captives.
