Quarterback prospect Trae Taylor, one of the top passers in the 2027 recruiting class, announced his commitment to Nebraska on Thursday.
Taylor, from a coveted recruit from Mundelein, Illinois, became the first player in the 2027 cycle to work on the Fruit Husks, whose verbal commitment was about 20 months before he was eligible for formal signatures. The 6-foot-3 and 185-pound pocket pass follows Ohio State’s promise Brady Edmunds, the second elite quarterback to announce his 2027 commitment.
Taylor chose Cornhuskers instead of Illinois, Louisiana State University and Texas A&M. He is the son of a former Eastern Illinois Huskimo, and he ran back to JR Taylor, a college teammate of four NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo from 1999 to 2002, which made 51 touchdowns.
Trae Taylor made 3,061 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions last fall when he was a sophomore at Carmel Catholic High School. His commitment was to start quarterback Dylan Raiola in his latest visit after a few days he spent with Huskers quarterback coach Glenn Thomas.
"Sit down with Coach Thomas, break into the offense and see how he coaches Dylan and how he prepares for my next level - I can't really wait," Taylor told ESPN. "It's too hard for me because I have to wait so long to get there."
Despite Taylor's early commitment, Taylor had a long hiring—he estimated that he had visited up to 70 campuses since sixth-grade students attended college camps. A year later, Taylor received his first Division I scholarship in Maryland.
Smooth throwing moves and excellent footwork and accuracy later turned Taylor into one of the quarterback prospects for the 2027 grade.
After visiting Nebraska on March 27, Taylor next went to Texas A&M. He told ESPN that the attention he received from the Fruits immediately after visiting the Aggies - combined with Nebraska's offensive plan under coach Matt Rhule - was part of the connection that ultimately helped him commit to the Fruits.
“On the second day I got home from A&M, I had contacted Coach Rhule, coach Thomas and Dylan (Raiola) every day and over the next two weeks I decided that this was where I needed it. Everyone in this building made it clear that they wanted me. Their offense was for me well--very important was the very important quarterback.
Taylor said he said he was not planning to go to other campuses outside Nebraska, but said he would continue to engage with other programs, nearly two years after signing. He is expected to remain a primary target for Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Illinois and LSU.
