New York City Mayor Eric Adams said 19 people were injured in the crash, four of whom were serious.
Officials said a Mexican Navy sailboat has fallen into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, injured at least 19 people, including four in critical condition.
The incident happened on Saturday.
The video posted online shows the ship sailing under the bridge and connects the New York City Borough of Brooklyn and Manhattan, which are the tops of its three masts colliding with the iconic structure.
When the mast falls into the bridge deck, the mast can be seen breaking and partially collapse.
The ship was flying a huge green, white and red Mexican flag, then crawled from the shore toward the onlookers and drifted towards the river.
On the damaged mast, the sailor can be seen high and seen.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said 19 people were injured in the crash and four were taken seriously, but the 142-year-old bridge suffered significant losses.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
Sydney Neidell and Lily Katz told the Associated Press that they were sitting outside watching the sunset when they saw the ship hit a bridge and its mast. Looking closer, they saw someone hanging from the boat.
"We saw people swaying around, I couldn't tell if it was blurry or my eyes, we were able to zoom in on the phone, and someone hung from the top, like at least 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them," Katz said.
They said they saw two people evacuate from the stretcher to the smaller ship.
The Mexican Navy said in an article on X that the academy training ship Cuauhtemoc was damaged in an accident with the Brooklyn Bridge, which prevented it from continuing its navigation.
It added that the naval and local authorities that are providing assistance are reviewing the status of personnel and materials.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry said on X that its ambassador to the United States and officials at the Mexican consulate in New York are in contact with local authorities to provide assistance to "affected trainees", but did not mention the harm.
The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883 and has a main span of nearly 1,600 feet (490 meters) and is supported by two masonry towers.
According to the city’s Department of Transportation, more than 100,000 vehicles and about 32,000 pedestrians cross the bridge every day, and its sidewalks are the main tourist destination.
