The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office said 11 prisoners believed "armed and dangerous" to escape the New Orleans prison. Inmates were found missing in the routine total held at Orleans Parish Prison at 8:30 a.m., according to the sheriff's office. They are believed to have escaped sometime after midnight.
New Orleans Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick said that a prisoner has since been captured by surveillance cameras through facial recognition in downtown New Orleans. Louisiana State Police identified the escaper as Kendell Myles and said Myles attempted to escape on foot and was arrested "without further incidents."
Police said the remaining escapees were believed to be in New Orleans. Orleans Parish Prison was locked.
"The search is currently being conducted and OPSO is working with local and state law enforcement agencies to conduct a search to return it to them," the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Kirkpatrick said in a press conference that New Orleans police, including their arrest warrants for violent criminals, the FBI and U.S. Sheriffs joined the hunt in search of escaped prisoners - all violent criminals were held in the same prison. Louisiana State Police are also searching.
Kirkpatrick said police were still waiting for a set of photos of escaped prisoners at noon Friday. She said they informed some of the victims of the victims, some facing murder or other charges of violence. Kirkpatrick said police evacuated a family from their home and brought them to safety.
She asked the public to notify the police if they were victims or witnesses who escaped from trial so that they could get help.
She said the escaper might be helpful and unlikely to be still on the jumpsuit.
Kirpatrick warned the public that if they hid or helped the escapees, they would "be prosecuted."
