Donald Trump and Donald Trump, the leader of the world's richest country, and Elon Musk, the world's richest man, seem to be the perfect match.
But in the past 10 days, the two have changed from gentle disagreements to painful quarrels. These are the public moments that break their relationship down.
Musk criticized Trump's plans for the new tax and spending bill in his speech in CBS News - saying the plan's legislation "disappointed" him.
Trump later admitted to reporters that he was not satisfied with some aspects of the bill and was “excited” about certain aspects, such as tax cuts.
However, he did not directly comment on Musk's remarks.
Musk announced that he will leave the Trump administration after the time planned by the Trump administration, with the end of the special employees of the special government. He led a cost-cutting task called the Ministry of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Trump praised Musk for appearing in his last day of press conference at the White House, Musk.
The president said Musk “had not really left” and would continue to “go back and forth” the White House.
Trump defended his “big and beautiful bill” in posts about the Truth Society, claiming “many false statements” about his landmark economic policy.
Musk once again attacked Trump's plan bill, calling it "huge, outrageous, full of pork" and "disgustingly abominable."
In American politics, “pork” refers to spending on projects in legislators’ constituencies.
It marks the beginning of Musk's escalation in comments on social media.
Musk called for a new spending bill that "will not significantly increase the (US government budget) deficit and increase the debt ceiling."
Musk urged his followers to call on his representatives to oppose Trump's bill.
Musk quoted a series of old articles on Trump in 2012 and 2013, as Trump criticized administration spending.
Speaking at the Oval Office with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump said he and Musk had “a good relationship but “I don’t know if we will come again.”
He also said Musk's subsidies for electric vehicles will be cut in his planned bill, which will affect billionaires' Tesla and SpaceX businesses.
Musk responded to the Oval Office broadcast in real time, dismissing Trump's claims.
Back at the White House, Trump told reporters Musk knew “all aspects of the bill” and said he was “very disappointed with Elon.”
"Error," Musk on X replied. “This bill has never even been shown to me and is passed so quickly in the death of the night that few people in Congress would read it!”
Musk re-lays the old Trump post on X, highlighting the moment when the president criticizes the U.S. budget deficit. "Where is this guy today?" he asked.
Musk replied to another user on X, saying, "Without me, Trump will lose the election." He continued, "So unreasonable."
Musk claimed on X that "the ugly bill will increase the deficit to $2.5 trillion."
Musk continues to quote old Trump posts on X about government spending. He asked, “Where are the people who wrote these words?
"It's time to create a new party in the United States that actually represents 80% of the middle?" Musk asked in a poll about X.
Trump began posting on his truth social platform saying Musk has been "slim in dressing", so he asked him to leave the White House and accused Musk of "crazy".
Musk called it a "obvious lie."
Trump continued in another article: "The easiest way to save money in our budget is to terminate Elon's government subsidies and contracts."
Musk claimed that without providing evidence, Trump appeared in the "Epstein Archives" referring to court documents and evidence collected by investigators against convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump said on social media that he didn't mind "Elon was against me" and continued to defend his bill.
Musk responded to Trump's suggestion that he could terminate his government contract with Musk, saying he would immediately retire the Dragon Spacecraft, a spacecraft capable of traveling to the International Space Station.
Musk seems to be citing a conspiracy theorist while endorsing Trump, who shared his Epstein’s archives of the president’s claims.
Musk attacked Trump's other signature policy - his trade tariffs - posted on X saying "will cause a recession in the second half of this year".
Musk seems to be softening, answering X to another billionaire Trump supporter, Bill Ackman, who calls on the two to “realize peace for the good of our great nation”.
Trump described Musk as "a person who lost his mind" in an interview with ABC News and said he was "not special" about what he talked to.
The White House told BBC's Trump was not going to talk to tech billionaires today, after they would speak on the phone later.
CBS, the BBC's U.S. partner, also reported that Trump was considering selling his Tesla car - he bought him when he tried to help Musk promote the company.
