The U.S. president claims that despite revenue of $30 billion in 2024, Hollywood is still “death very quickly.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on foreign films, claiming that Hollywood is suffering “very fast death” due to overseas competition.

In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said he had directed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of imposing tariffs on “any and all” films made by “foreign land.”

“Other countries are offering various incentives to keep our film producers and studios away from the United States. Many other areas in Hollywood and many other areas within the United States have been devastated.”

“This is a unanimous effort by other countries and therefore a national security threat. Message and publicity are included among everything else!”

When reporters asked about tariffs later Sunday, Trump claimed that the United States was making “very few movies now.”

“Other countries, many countries have stolen our film industry,” he said. “If they are unwilling to make movies in the United States, we should impose tariffs on the movie’s films.”

Trump did not elaborate on how this tariff would be practical, including whether it would be applied to Hollywood features involving shooting and production in multiple countries.

Trump's announcement was “special ambassadors” responsible for causing Hollywood to lose other countries in January.

At the time, Trump said that when he set out to formulate the “Golden Age of Hollywood,” the actor would be “my eyes and ears.”

Amid the consequences of the Covid-19-19 pandemic and the 2023 actor and writer strike, Hollywood has faced a tough business situation in recent years.

Hollywood Studios saw a global box office of about $30 billion last year, down about 7% from 2023, according to Gower Street Analytics.

According to Gower Street Analytics, last year's performance was improved in revenues in 2020, 2021 and 2022, but it was still below the average of the Big Depletemead.

Trump's latest tariff threat appears to increase tensions in Washington's relationship with other countries that are already working to deal with a range of responsibilities in the sector from steel to automobiles.

Australian Art Minister Anthony Burke said on Thursday he was closely monitoring the situation.

“No one should undoubtedly stand up for the rights of the Australian screen industry,” Burke told ABC.
