How a New York real estate mogul became Trump's man in Gaza negotiations

He was an aide to Donald Trump when it came to the ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, but Steve Witkopf is not a diplomat, despite his appointment as the president-elect's Middle East special envoy.

Instead, he brought decades of experience in some of New York's largest real estate deals to the negotiating table and opened up about his personal losses in tough negotiations.

The Bronx-born billionaire real estate developer has a sharply different image than the American diplomat who typically drafts complex international agreements. Witkoff, 67, grew up on Long Island and trained as a real estate attorney before carving a path in the chaotic world of New York real estate development.

He has known Trump for decades, is a Republican donor and serves on one of Trump's Great American Economic Recovery industry groups to combat the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. He will also be one of the speakers at Trump's pre-inauguration rally on Sunday, joining Hulk Hogan, Megyn Kelly, Elon Musk and others.
