Tesla is suing the European Union to demand tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, which is the latest confrontation between the car manufacturer's billionaire owner Elon Musk and Brussels.

The European court announced on its website on Monday the confirmation of the Tesla Shanghai subsidiary, but did not provide more details.

Before Tesla's lawsuit, BMW and several Chinese auto manufacturers in Germany also filed similar claims.

In October, the European Union levied up to 7.8%of the anti -subsidy tariffs on Tesla, and levied up to 35.3%of other Chinese imported electric vehicles produced by other auto manufacturers by 35.3%of anti -subsidy tariffs. This is a supplement to the 10% standard import tariffs in the industry.

Anti -subsidy tariffs were proposed after the EU's unfair support for China's electric vehicle industry in 2023. Brussels found that auto manufacturers benefited from subsidies such as soft loans, cheap land transactions, and suppliers such as steel manufacturers.

About one -fifth of all electric vehicles sold by the European Union last year were made in China. According to data from environmental protection and non -governmental organization transportation and environmental organizations, in 2023, Tesla accounted for 28%of Chinese manufacturing electric vehicles imported by the European Union, exceeding any other brands.

The European Union's individual review found that Tesla has the least support for the Chinese government, so it is hit by the minimum tariffs.

Tesla executives said they are adjusting the import policy from China to respond to EU tariffs. The company currently exports Model 3 vehicles from Shanghai and produces Model Y in Berlin.

Legal documents do not explain Tesla's argument in detail. Cases of the European Commission will be tried in the General Court of the Second Higher Court of the European Union and can appeal to the European courts on the judgment. This process may take about 18 months.

The European Commission's trade spokesman Olov Gill said in response to Tesla's document on Monday: “We are going to defend our case in court when necessary.”

Musk is a adviser to US President Donald Trump and a blunt critics for EU technical supervision. He supports extremely right -winged German alternative Party in the country's campaign.

According to the European automotive industry ACEA, Tesla's new registration volume decreased 13%year -on -year to 242,945 units in 2024. Musk's political radicalism was accused of preventing some drivers from buying Tesla, although this made others more likely to buy Tesla.
