Novak Djokovic
Madrid – Novak Djokovic asked for more applause after raising his ears and demanding the 24-time Major Championship chasing a clearly lost ball and winning incredible views.
It turned out to be Djokovic's last breath when he fell straight into Matteo Arnaldi in the first game of the Madrid Open on Saturday.
The 37-year-old Djokovic lost three straight games. Including the loss of the Miami final and his opening match at Alejandro Tabilo at the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago as he struggled as he swung the beginning of the clay field before the French Open next month.
Arnaldi won 6-3, 6-4, postponing Djokovic's search for a 100th career championship. The Serbs suffered 32 uncompulsory errors as their opponent's 18-year-old, and sent out three times.
This is the first meeting between Djokovic and Italy's 44th ARNALDI.
“He is my idol, he has always been,” Arnaldi said of Djokovic. “Playing him on a stage like this is already a win for me. He is not at his best yet, so I tried to play my best tennis in court and win, and that happened.”
Arnaldi raised his arms and turned to the crowd after hitting a winner, which gave him a second set break. Djokovic tried to hit back and got three breakout points, but Arnaldi gathered to save his serve and ended the three-time championship.
When the winner gave the TV audience the information of what he is now, he wrote “OMG” on his camera (Oh, my God).
Djokovic is still seeking his first title of the season after winning his 99th title at the Paris Olympics last August. He has lost four finals since then. Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) are the only two players to reach 100 title milestones.
Arnaldi will next face Damir Dzumhur as he drove past Sebastian Baez 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
