    New ice expulsion operation and possible dwarf planet discovery: morning collapse

    A new new ice action shows how Donald Trump’s focus on immigration reshapes federal law enforcement. Higher steel tariffs have begun. Potential new dwarf planets were identified. Food maker Campbell's said more and more people reach for snack pantry.

    This is what you need to know today.

    The Trump administration’s largest immigration crackdown is underway, but other federal law enforcement agencies redistribute personnel for “large-scale operations” has caused tension among some officials who believe they have been canceled by the core national security mission.

    The new ice-led initiative is a response to the frustration of White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, as he believes arrests and deportations are the number of unauthorized immigrants. Miller was so frustrated that he did not start detaining 3,000 immigrants a day and threatened to fire senior ice officials, two sources said. He also threatened to fire leaders of the on-site office to publish a minimum of 10% of arrests per month.

    Here is a summary of the morning, and it's a workday newsletter to start your day. Sign up here Put it in your inbox.

    Under the action plan, the initiative calls on the help of thousands of people, including:

    →3,000 ICE agents, including 1,800 from the Homeland Security Survey, which typically investigates transnational crime;

    →2,000 Department of Justice employees from the FBI, U.S. Marshal Service and DEA;

    →500 employees from customs and border protection; and

    →250 IRS agents, some of whom can use tax information to provide tax information about the whereabouts of immigrants, while others have the right to arrest.

    The action is the latest example of how President Donald Trump’s drive to reshape federal law enforcement, with less time and attention on other types of criminal investigations.

    Now, FBI agents are joining immigration-related law enforcement operations, which once was unusual. The Justice Department team focused on other issues is being dissolved so that members can spend time on immigration and other administrative priorities. Federal courts often see misdemeanor cases of transit, which is rare in recent years. Federal cases without immigration components are stagnant or slow to move.

    “There are such priorities to conducting immigration arrests that it takes longer to get answers on anything else,” law enforcement officials said. “The issues that were solved the past few days ago took weeks.”

    How Measles torn through remote West Texas City

    One Saturday in mid-March, Dr. Ben Edwards put on a scrub and drove to a metal building to treat children with measles. The red spots mottled his face. Edwards also fell ill with measles.

    The disease broke out in Gaines County, which has the lowest rate of vaccination in childhood in the country. For two weeks, many families have been winding around the building’s parking lot, almost all belonging to the area’s Mennonite neighborhood. Edwards distributed cod liver oil and prescribed steroid inhalers. On the way to the only hospital in Seminole, a waiting room for measles patients is often empty and there is little need for vaccines, which is the only way to prevent the disease.

    So, there are two responses to deal with a motion for a highly contagious disease – one based on science and evidence and the other driven by distrust and advocacy, the first time in memory by the federal Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

    Seminole offers a look behind the frontlines in those crucial months, and a warning to a country increasingly undermined by political reality. Read the full story of senior journalist Brandy Zadrozny here.

    Possible new dwarf planets found in our solar system

    They set out to find the “Nine Planets” and instead find another inhabitant in our cosmic backyard. Researchers from the Advanced Research Institute and Princeton University said they found a possible dwarf star at the edge of the solar system. The estimated size is much smaller than Pluto, which is nearly 1,500 miles away. So far, it takes about 25,000 years to complete a track around the sun.

    The researchers said they found dwarf planet candidates by screening the huge data set of Chilean telescopes, which is scanning the universe for evidence of dark energy. If confirmed, the target called OF2017 in 201 might be what the research team leader Sihao Cheng calls Pluto’s “extreme cousin.”

    Meanwhile, the search for the “Nine Planets” is a hypothetical planet larger than Earth than Earth, which is still outside Neptune. Read the full story here.
