Dolphins choose Texas QB Quinn Ewers in round 7 of NFL Draft

Miami Gardens, Fla. – Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said in January that “every stone will have to work hard” as the team focused on the backup quarterback position this offseason, especially after starting Tua Taa Tagovailoa missed a career-high six games in 2024.

Miami added another big name player to Saturday’s quarterback room after signing veteran Zach Wilson, picking Texas’ Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the NFL draft.

Ewers is the second largest recruit from Southlake (Texas) Carroll. ESPN made him the seventh quarterback in this year's draft class, and he ended up being the 13th QB. Greer said he first met with coach Mike McDaniel on 2024's Pro Day in Texas and was impressed after talking to Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian.

“Sack really liked him, was high on him, and talked about the game he was injured this year, which affected his game,” Greer said. “But (Sakis) talked about his resilience, his mental toughness, injury, expectation, (arches) Manning's pressure came in. He liked his competitiveness, his competitiveness, how he played and how his teammates reacted to him.

Ewers made 24 interceptions in three seasons at Texas, investing 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns, completing his 64.9% pass. Over the past two seasons, he has finished his career with the history of the Longhorns and touchdown passes and touchdown passes with a 21-5 record and a continuous college football playoff game.

His 2024 season was affected by a slanted tear and a sprain of his high ankle. He said he was fully healthy in only three games in 2024, and the italic injury began in the Michigan State game in September. He missed two games before getting an ankle injury against Kentucky in November. He has served as the nephew of famous recruit Manning, former Super Bowl quarterback Peyton and Eli Manning for the last two seasons, as the starting job at Texas.

Eus said that reducing the pressure on senior recruits will help strengthen him in the long run when playing for one of the nation’s most demanding programs.

“I think it shows my mental hardship,” Yus said Saturday. “I like to go through adversity because I know I have plans to attack. Everything that happened in my college days, I know will only help me.”

Ewers will compete with Wilson for the Dolphins backup role this summer. He is their second quarterback drafted over the past three years. Miami took over Skylar Thompson in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, and he went on to start three games as a rookie, including a playoff loss by the Buffalo Bills.
