Composer Stephen Schwartz's “Evil 2” at the ASCAP Musical Theater Festival
Stephen Schwartz returns to host the ASCAP Foundation Musical Theater Festival.
The event will be held for two days from May 5-6 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (Walis) in Beverly Hills.
“Songs in the Tailor Room” will open the festival and offer unheard of gems that haven't become the biggest Broadway show. Schwartz, along with Irene Sankoff and David Hein (“From Escape”) will provide an in-depth evening of performance and story involving songs that must be sacrificed to create the perfect musical.
Schwartz is no stranger to song cutting from musicals. His upcoming Broadway show, Queen of Versailles, is currently in progress. Schwartz told type, “There must be twelve songs that we don’t use in the end,” he added. “Writing a musical is about the development process. There are few musicals that aren’t written for them during the development process and end up being cut or replaced, and that’s just something that is determined in the process that is valid and has no work.”
The evening was supported by the Gary Gailder Musical Theater Foundation.
On May 6, Schwartz will host the ASCAP Foundation Musical and Librettist Workshop, which includes a unique new music bill that will allow viewers to peek at the next big ticket to Broadway. The composers will introduce excerpts from their new musical and, after each speech, Schwartz will hold feedback sessions with writers and other masters of crafts.
The seminar will begin with the creative team of Roslyn Catracchia and Peter Seibert, who will introduce excerpts from their new musical, Piney Headlesmith, without the path.
In the second performance of the night, Julian Hornik, Khiyon Hursey and Mark Sonnenblick will introduce the choice from their new musical, The Weekend.
According to Schwartz, “The Nuggets of the Enlightenment” are included every night. He continued: “You never know where they are going to come from. I've learned more from attending seminars over the years than anyone else. They're always fun, and they're always different because everyone shows different performances, and the mix of writers and group members is always different. So you never know when someone will say you know something meaningful or can provide a breakthrough.”
In addition to organizing the studio, Schwartz also works hard to “Evil: Forever”, a sequel to “Evil” in 2024. “We are trying to keep our heads and focus because there is a lot of work to do, but it's exciting, both movies are so popular and daunting. We have a lot to live up to.” The composer and lyricist said, “The film is scheduled to be released on November 21 and chronicles the second act of the long-running Broadway sensation. “So, I can't deny that it's going to feel stressed, but that's a good question they're talking about,” Schwartz added.
Previous ASCAP Foundation Musical Theater Seminar alumni include Steven Lutvak (“A Guide to Love and Murder for Gentlemen”), Glenn Slater (“Rock of Rock”), Matthew Sklar & Chad Beguelin (“Prom, “Elf the Musical”), Marcy Heisler Heisler and Zina Goldrich (Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich) (“Dear Edwina” and “ever” Story”). The night was supported by the Kenward Elsley Foundation.
