China leads global propylene capacity expansion to 2030
It is expected that by 2030, China is expected to be at the forefront of global propylene capabilities. This growth is expected to be driven by China's massive manufacturing base and strong domestic demand for propylene, driven by the country's vast sectors such as automobiles, petrochemicals and textiles.
By 2030, China will have a total of 32 projects, which is expected to increase the overall capacity by 22.87 million tons (MTPA) each year. Among them, 18 projects are currently under construction, with an estimated increase of 12.61mtpa. In addition, there are 14 projects in the pre-construction phase and the total capacity is expected to be added to 10.27mtpa during the prospect period.
The country's main capacity increase comes from a project before construction – “Shandong Petrochemical Dragon Propylene Plant 2”, located in Longkou City. It is expected to be launched in 2030 with a capacity of 2MTPA. Shandong Yulong Petrochemical is the operator of plants with a 100% stake.
Meanwhile, “Sabic Fuji Petrochemical Zhangzhou Propylene Plant” and “Fujian Yongrong New Material Company Putian Propylene Plant 2” are two notable projects in Fujian Province. These projects are expected to begin operations in 2026 and 2029, with capacity of 1.02MTPA and 1.10MTPA respectively. In addition, Guangdong's “Oriental Energy Propene Plant 3” and “Oriental Energy Arctic Propene Plant 4” are significant capacity expansions in the country, with a capacity of 1MTPA per plant. These plants are expected to begin operations in 2028.
