The Proof of Concept is an accelerator program, with the work of its first inaugural class held Tuesday night in a showroom in Los Angeles by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini and renowned researcher Dr. Stacy L. Smith.

“The display cabinet is a celebration of the cornucopia of new, beautiful views, and importantly, it is a celebration of this crucial step for these filmmakers,” Blanchett said. “From here we know that these helmsmen can start shaping and rebuilding the industry.”

Blanchett was almost out, speaking from London, while Smith, Dr. Francini and Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria celebrated with filmmakers and their actors at the Tudum Theatre in Hollywood in Netflix.

“Proof of concept is what we hope for – producing bold, inspiring filmmakers and filmmakers that prove that these filmmakers are ready to take the next step,” Francini said from the stage. “It's time to get the industry to notice because these talented storytellers share the execution of their thoughts and imaginations and seek partners to bring their further work to life. I'm excited to see what will happen for these directors in the future.”

“When we launch the proof of concept, the goal is to support filmmakers ready to enter the industry. We know these stories will expand the apertures of stories targeting female, trans and non-binary perspectives and accelerate the careers of these directors. The films generated by this program show the immense talent of the next generation.”

The proof of concept was created after 2023 dirty film partners Blanchett and Francini met Smith, founder of Smith at the Cannes Film Festival. The trio then embark on a task that will support a group of emerging filmmakers by debugging projects that will serve as a “proof of concept” for long-form content, whether it's a feature film or a plot series. Each filmmaker received $50,000 to support their short films as well as guidance support. Supported by the Netflix Creative Equity Fund, the program expanded to include filmmakers for documentary projects, further expanding opportunities to impact changes across the industry.

“When we heard that Stacy was creating a new program with Coco Francini and Cate Blanchett to support often overlooked filmmakers, we jumped in,” Bajaria On stage. “We are excited to support this initiative.”

The display box features the first class of the show’s 10th film producer. Blanchett, Francini and Smith and their All-Star Picks Committee, Emma Corrin, Eva Longoria, Eva Longoria, Greta Gerwig, Jane Campion, Janicza Bravo, Lily Gladstone and Lilly Wachowski – selected participants for over 1,200 apps.
