Auto union president who supports Harris says now is the time to work with Trump
United Auto Workers (UAW) President Sean Fein said in an op-ed published Sunday that his union is “ready to work with President-elect Donald Trump.”
“For 40 years, the American working class, especially blue-collar manufacturing workers, has been under attack,” Fein wrote in the Washington Post. “Corporate America went on the offensive in the 1980s, closing factories and eliminating thousands of jobs.”
Since 2016, Trump has made labor policy, immigration, tariffs and working-class voters a core part of his campaign and political platform. However, union leaders like Fein, who previously supported outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have not always supported Trump.

“Donald Trump capitalized on the betrayal of both parties in 2016 and gave voice to workers’ anger and disillusionment,” Fein wrote in his op-ed, titled “I am president of the United Auto Workers. We are ready to work with Trump.”
“He promised to fix the system, but the NAFTA agreement he renegotiated, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), did not solve the problem,” Fein continued. “Since the passage of this bill, the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico has only grown, and thousands of blue-collar jobs continue to leave the country.”
Fein endorsed Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign, saying the choice for American voters was to return “billionaires to power who are opposed to everything our unions stand for, or we can elect Kamala Harris, who will stand by our side.” Fight” in our war on corporate greed. ”
Trump responded harshly to Fein's comments in closing night speech republican national convention (Republican National Committee).
“The leaders of the United Auto Workers should be fired immediately,” Trump said in July 2024. “Every autoworker, union or non-union, should vote for Donald Trump because we are going to restore autoworkers Manufacturing, we will bring it back as soon as possible.”

“While we supported Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, we have always said our fight will be the same no matter who is in the White House,” Fein wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post on Sunday. “On the campaign trail, Trump promised to use the USMCA's six-year renegotiation provision to pursue a 'better deal,' specifically targeting the auto industry. We agree with Trump that the USMCA needs to be fixed.”

Fein said that despite policy differences with Trump, he hopes to “find common ground on overhauling our destructive trade policies and rebuilding American manufacturing.”
“As Trump himself has said, 'free trade' is 'carnage' for the American working class,” Fein wrote. “The corporate class has rigged the situation and American workers have lost. It’s time to reshuffle the deck and fix our broken trade deals for workers everywhere. The UAW stands ready to support any politician or government who stands up to corporate greed , to do this”.
