Texas ends South Carolina's 57-game SEC regular season winning streak
Austin, Texas – Texas assistant coach Elena Lovato made a bold statement last month to head coach Vic Scahaefer because The Longhorns beat South Carolina with 17 points.
“(She) looked at me and said, 'We will beat them in a month'” Schaefer said Sunday. ”
Fourth-place Longhorns made the most of their national TV game in the Super Bowl Sunday and won the game 66-62 second place, a victory that ended the Gamecocks in the regular season Southeastern League game The record of 57 consecutive wins can be traced back to December 2021.
The Longhorns won three games with Gamecocks and LSU’s SEC rankings, with all games 10-1.
South Carolina (22-2) has arrived with confidence since losing to the highest-ranked UCLA on November 24, with Dawn Staley wearing a Super Bowl sweatshirt to support her The Filadelphia Eagles later that day, the City Chiefs of New Orleans won the NFL championship.
Madison Booker of Texas scored 20 points, while Rori Harmon hit two key free throws in the final seconds to ensure Longhorns' eighth straight win , won the 20th consecutive game since January 2024.
Staley is usually the one who considers the bigger picture of her sport.
“The atmosphere is great,” Steeley said. “This is very useful for women's basketball and may be very suitable for television. Close play, very suitable for our game. Unfortunately, someone has to lose.”
Texas (24-2) has never played in the first game against South Carolina, shooting 28% from the field. The Longhorn hit 44% on Sunday. They surpassed Gamecocks 42-35, 40-26 in the paint and a second chance score of 19-12.
“Winning this game requires a tremendous resilience,” Schaefer said. “They won. I don't have to tell you how great our team is today. In my opinion, they are the number one team in the country. I mean Disrespect for UCLA.”
Booker converted only three of 19 shots during his defeat in South Carolina. She shot better against South Carolina’s tough defense, hit seven of 22 shots and grabbed 11 rebounds, including a key player in the late game.
“Roberation is my job,” Booker said. “I should be there.”
Sophomore Booker is not only the best player in Texas, but the widest range of players. The 6-foot-1 Booker was a natural small forward last season, moved to point guard last season and replaced Harmon after a knee injury at the end of the season. Texas recently lost power forward Aaliyah Moore due to a knee injury, and now Booker claims he's more of a rebounder.
“She is a beast on the board,” Staley said.
Texas Center Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre combined for 24 points and 12 rebounds.
“That's my two monsters,” Schaefer said.
Schaefer proudly showed them to audiences across the country.
“It makes me happy to be a part of it,” Harmon said. “History and this sport in women's basketball. Being able to have this game like a little former (Super Bowl) game. I think it's so cool. ”
