The final scene of the ending of the “Handmaid's Story”: 'Impossible'

(This story contains from The story of the maid The series finale, titled “The Story of the Handmaid.” )

Now The story of the maid Madeline Brewer tells its story, which can react to Jenny's ending.

The final episode is tasked with ending the story of June (Elisabeth Moss), while also setting up Hulu's Gilead TV Universe through the upcoming sequel series, will. Margaret Atwood's 1985 follow-up story The story of the maid The novel focuses on June's daughter Hannah, who changed her name to Agnes in Gilead. will The sequel novel, published in 2019, influenced how series creators Bruce Miller and co-demonstrators Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang ended the series: The show can't end because Hannah is still in Hannah, as Hannah is still in Gilead will. But the writers did hold another blessed mother-daughter party.

In the finale of the series “The Handmaid's Tale,” written by Miller, directed by Moss, Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) agent exchanges the return of baby Angela (real name Charlotte) to her biological mother Jenny. Angela's Gilead mother, Naomi, Ever Carradine, attended the meeting and agreed to send the child back to Janine after Janine was also rescued from Gilead's captivity and returned to June. Janine's child was born as an adopted daughter in season 1 and painfully took her away from her.

Speaking to Brewer about Janine's finale, she said that it was “impossible” when she first watched the scene. Looking back on her first day, she got a little bit about the feeling of the dystopian legend in Season 1: “I can't believe we can tell this story. I can't believe we'll be like that.”

Now that she is over, Brewer and Hollywood Reporter Imagine Jenny and her daughter Charlotte in the future below – even if it may not be displayed will.

Looking back at the sixth episode of the final season, Janine predicted the end of the series while arguing with Jezebel's Lydia.

When I say “We're going to burn this place to the ground”, right?

Yes. Janine tells Lydia that Gilead will collapse and that the only way she can do good things between them is if Lydia returns to Charlotte: “I want Charlotte, you stole her from me.” Do you know how the series will end when you shoot the episode?

No. I don't know when we filmed that episode – we haven't read the ending yet. I thought Janine just wanted to dig a little in Lydia. Because by then Jenny knew what June and Moira were planning (with Mayday's attack on Jezebel). But I don't think that Jenny was thinking she would let her daughter come back was a delusion.

Jenny (Madeline Brewer) and daughter Charlotte) are in the series finale.

So when you read the finale, you're conscious about seeing Jenny really bringing Charlotte back with Lydia's help?

I'm relieved, but thanks to our writers. This is not a big fanfare. Naomi (Ever Carradine) made this incredibly difficult decision, and Lydia took care of Janine until the last moment. I thought it was so beautiful. I was very happy with Jenny's ending. It could go a lot of different ways, and that's everything she wants. There is a lot of love between June and Jenny – I always call them “Janune”!

Jenny is like June's acting daughter. June is also always trying to get Jenny back. Are you starting to imagine what Janine's life would look like from here. Will she participate in the resistance battle?

I think she will be involved in Mayday somehow, but I don't think it will leave her daughter somehow. If she stayed in Canada, I would have seen Jenny doing refugee support. or work with people who used to be a maid and reintegrate it into the society. Lawrence said her daughter is a genius, so there might be a big deal in Charlotte!

You and I said throughout the season that even in Season 4, you know that Jenny could have died any time on the show. Jenny has gone through so many experiences – arguably more than any character. Therefore, to see that she has received this happy ending, June is still unable to get…

    Correct.

Feeling very deserved. How does this feel for you throughout the process, because you never know what they planned for Janine?

I have hope. But I don't think I really hope for anything because I can't even imagine it. That's not my job (laughing) (writing the show), but that's why I've never made too many decisions before. I had hoped that eventually we would flash back and I didn’t want me to decide to conflict with what they wrote. So I don't want to make too many decisions. I want to be surprised by my way.

And it is indeed the case. I watched Janine's last scene with Charlotte in ADR (Automatic dialogue replacement). I can't accommodate it. Not even because it ends, or because it feels so happy or sad. But because I am proud of her. I am proud that Janine has always been herself, not letting them take the fire from her. And become a good friend, a good mother and a good person.

A few years ago, one of our writers told me, “Listen, I don't think we'll ever kill you. It's not the ending we want her to have.” I always feel (if they did kill Janine) that I understand how the story structure works, which may be necessary. But I also feel very honored that they want to see Jenny until the end.

We know Lydia has made a big change will Book – She became the one who tried to redeem herself. How much do you think Lydia's relationship with Janine inspired her to see the light, especially in the last season, where Janine forces her to face what she does, and Lydia is listening in a new way?

I think only the real one is Jenny, who will completely change Lydia's mind because of their relationship. Even in episode 3, when she first came to Jezebel's and Janine, “That's Ofkyle. These are your girls. They lie to you. What are you thinking? You're just believing them. Why do you believe in these men?” This is especially in episode 8 (when they face her in the Red Center). We positioned it as June will be there first, and then I confessed as the last one. The ringtone really dragged Lydia's heart. I think Aunt Lydia has some redemption in my eyes at least. She made sure Jenny brought her daughter back. That was her ultimate commitment.

So Lydia is working undercover and has some relationship with Tuello (Sam Jaeger) and the Good Man. Do you think this makes Janine in will Sequel series? Is that anything you have in conversation?

No, I don't. I don't think Bruce (Miller, the creator of both) The story of the maid and will) has closed the book about the conversation. I don't think he's going to close the book in any of these conversations (with characters) because in his eyes, if they're in Canada, why not? And, I like to end with Aunt Lydia. I don't know I need another one, but I certainly don't rule it out either.

Elisabeth Moss (right) directs Madeline Brewer to participate in the final scene of Janine.

I want to see Jenny raise Charlotte. I want to see her as a mother.

I know. I just don't want to wear my eyes anymore! I'm very tired. I've taken a lot of shots you ((Brewer starred in the final season of the Netflix series,,,,, Shot before the maid's last season) Where they call it “action”, I thought, “Oh, damn. I'm missing something.” I thought I needed an eye patch.

    Have you kept your eyes?

I do have my eye patch. We tried two, but we ended up just sticking with one because it was very suitable and worked very well. So, in the end there is only one, I have.

Jenny lost her eyes in the pilot. So you've been wearing eye patches for nearly a decade from the start.

I know she will lose one eye when she auditioned. Jenny had one eye in the book. On the show, I arrived at the Red Center and that night, they caught my attention. But I had no eyes on the first day of the scene because our order failed. I didn't actually shoot on the first day because there were so many shots that we didn't do it. But I remember the scene where I was pregnant with a huge silicone (watch) when all the maids killed their eyes. They brought out the man, who was a girl raped the eyes and Lydia basically beat him to death. There are many maids. Until today, I saw a bunch of red robes that were dazzling when I was twenty-two years old. It's creepy and uncomfortable, but also the way those robes move and see the army – we obviously don't know this (last season) will see them becoming a large army of maids.

We discussed the timeliness of the series thrAbout oral history The story of the maid. Looking back, since the show was first launched in 2017, has the show resonated with people?

Absolutely. I think we all feel more politically active, engaged and vocally responsible. Then you hire someone like Bradley Whitford (season 2 comes as Lawrence). He was the man who posted support for Kamala in Michigan in the final stages of the election. He is very active. But (the rest of us) we end up being actors. We are creating TV shows for entertainment. We are not politicians. We are not activists as careers. We are artists.

But when you work on the show for many years and live within the bodies of these characters, you want to fight for them. We work with places that are doing real work to help us tell real stories like family planning. Janine went to the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Season 4 flashback. Crisis pregnancy center exists. They are all over the country and are there to bait and convert scared and vulnerable women, pregnant and study their choices. They were there to humiliate them and try to convince them to keep their pregnancy that they might not want. When studying these centers, it is really my responsibility to talk about them and tell people: exist. This is not a sorting. So there is nothing you can do.

OK, thanks, because if we don't plan to see June get her daughter Hannah back, we need to end up with Jenny.

    At least you need Charlotte!
