Musk made the announcement on X, where he announced his controversial government cost cuts measure the victory.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced he would leave the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, where he led a project for months to cut costs for the federal government.

“As my scheduled time as a special government employee ends, I want to thank President @realdonaldtrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he wrote on social media platform X on Wednesday night.

“The @doge mission will only strengthen over time because it becomes a way of life for the entire government,” Musk said.

An unnamed White House official confirmed the news with Reuters and the Associated Press.

Musk joined the Trump administration in January, pledging to cut at least $1 trillion from the U.S. federal budget, although Doge's website shows that its savings can only reach about $17.5 billion, or $1,088.96 per U.S. taxpayer.

Musk's departure coincides with the 130-day limit for “special government employees”, and the White House said Doge's efforts to cut federal spending and restructuring will continue.

However, the relationship between billionaires and the U.S. president seems to have cooled since last year, when Musk spent nearly $300 million on Trump's presidential campaign.

Elon Musk said his son XæA-12 and U.S. President Donald Trump listened on February 11, 2025 at the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, USA.

Last weekend, Musk publicly expressed concerns about Trump's flagship “big, beautiful bill,” a 1,000-page legislation that expanded the president's 2017 tax cuts while increasing job requirements for food aid and Medicaid.

Musk told the News on Sunday morning. I was disappointed to see a large amount of spending bills that increased the budget deficit, not just reduced the budget deficit and undermined the work the Governor’s team is doing. ”

The bill also allocates spending for some of Trump’s signature projects, such as building walls between the United States and Mexico and raising funds for immigration and customs enforcement.

The Big and Beautiful Bill passed in the House last week will be discussed by the Senate.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would cancel Doge's work if passed in the current format, as it is expected to increase the U.S. deficit by $3.9 trillion by 2034.

“I think the bills could be big, or they might be pretty, but I don't know if that's OK,” Musk told CBS.

Asked about Musk's concerns, Trump told reporters that work on the bill is still in progress.

“We will negotiate the bill, and I'm not happy with some aspects of it, but I'm excited about other aspects of it,” Trump said.

    “That’s how they walk.”

Trump avoided direct criticism of Musk, but U.S. media reported on clashes between billionaires and members of Trump’s cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

US news media Politico reported that Musk's exports were already under discussion as early as April and cited the names of U.S. officials after clashes with top White House officials and employees.

Some of Musk's layoffs have also shut down U.S. voters, including key swing countries. Earlier this year, the billionaire failed to win a conservative candidate in the Wisconsin Supreme Court game despite spending $20 million.

April polls by The Washington Post and ABC News also showed that Musk's work in the Trump administration was only 35% approval rate.

After scrutinizing public censorship, Musk said earlier this month that he would cut back on his political spending and refocus on companies like Tesla, the worst quarter since 2022.

Musk posted on his X platform over the weekend.
