U.S. President Donald Trump said he wanted to work with his Turkish counterparts to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had a “very good and productive” telephone conversation with Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who discussed a wide range of topics, including how to end the Russian war in Ukraine, Syria and Israel against Gaza.
On Monday's call, Trump said Erdogan invited him to Turkiye, an invitation to Turkish leaders to visit Washington, D.C. There is no announcement date.
Readings from the phone call for Türkiye's presidency confirmed that Erdogan invited Trump to visit.
The Republican president described his relationship with Erdogan as “excellent” during his time at the White House, saying the two countries will work together to end the Ukrainian war.
“I look forward to working with President Erdogan to get the ridiculous but deadly war between Russia and Ukraine ends–now!” Trump said in an article on his social media platform Truth Social.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO member Turkiye has tried to maintain good relations with his two Black Sea neighbors and hosted talks aimed at ending the war twice.
“He pointed out that he supported President Trump’s attitude to end the war, and President Erdogan praised the efforts made to keep the negotiation process with Iran and prevented the war between Russia and Ukraine.”
Erdogan also urgently needed a ceasefire in Gaza, warning that its humanitarian crisis had reached a “severe level.”
The Turkish president also stressed the importance of “the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid and the urgent end of this tragic situation.”
In neighbouring Syria, Erdogan reiterated Turkiye's commitment to maintaining its territorial integrity and restoring lasting stability.
He said the U.S. efforts to alleviate sanctions from Syria and its new government will help move the process forward and contribute to regional peace.
Regarding bilateral relations, Erdogan said Ankara remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Washington, especially at the Department of Defense.
Trump will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates next week.
