According to officials, a University of Delaware student died and eight others were injured as two people in two expired U-Haul trucks fled police in Newark, Delaware on Tuesday.

Police said it all started around 4:30 p.m. on April 29, when officers found a U-Haul truck after not returning on March 18 expiration date.

Officials said that when officers approached to arrest them, many people were parked inside the U-Haul 200 block of East Avenue.

Officials said the driver fled the parking lot and drove past the road and hit a Newark-marked police car. The suspect inside the truck ignored the police's orders, but the police reportedly did not chase the truck while fleeing the truck.

Then, about five minutes later, the truck drove very quickly on East Avenue when it hit two people standing next to the parked car, police said. The truck then crashed into several parked cars and then collapsed.

Police explained that the officer was called to that scene and tried life-saving measures on one of the pedestrian victims, but the man died from injury. They were later identified as students by the University of Delaware.

Officials said the other party hit by the truck suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital by paramedics.

At this point, officers said they found the broken U-Haul truck and arrested the driver and passengers. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital and suffered serious injuries. Aetna Hose, Hooker and Ladder Company reported three other people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and were injured in life-threatening injuries. The other three were also injured, but their injuries were minimal and medical treatments were reduced.

“We realized that those who screamed weren't very happy, but people who were scared. All we heard was a car crash and a bunch of noise.”

The Newark Police Department’s transportation department is investigating the incident, with East Avenue closed for hours Tuesday night near South Church Street.

SkyForce 10 in NBC Philadelphia was on site around 6 p.m., where black barricades could be seen blocking parts of the road and sidewalk.

It seems the crash involved U-Haul brand vans and several other cars.

One witness said they heard some loud bangs as they unfolded.

The University of Delaware wrote in a statement that there are no positive threats to the community and shared resources available to students.

University of Delaware students told NBC Philadelphia that they had received two alerts from the incident on the street at the school warnings, but did not get specific details about what happened.

As of the early hours of Wednesday, a memorial hall appeared at the scene of the fatal crash.

At the start of the school year in late August 2024, when freshman hit the street by a bicycle and was killed, the motorcycle riders stayed away from the police. Police said they did not chase the motorcycle riders in this case.

This is the second fatal crash in Newark, Delaware in two days.
