Rep. Shri Thanedar raises the main challenge of democracy as the left tries to bend its muscles in Michigan
Two-term Michigan deputies supported by Progressive Organisation General Justice Democrats launched a major challenge to Rep. Shri Thanedar on Monday, laying the foundation for a major fight in the House seat in the Detroit area.
The contest will also serve as another proxy fight against the Gaza War, criticism of the Israeli government, which once served as the state legislature, abandoned his membership as a democratic socialist in the United States after the October 7, 2023 attack on Hamas, saying the DSA did not provide sufficient condemnation to it. Earlier in 2023, Thanedar traveled to the U.S. Israel Public Affairs Committee to sponsor Israel.
In a statement, Michigan Rep. Donavan McKinney, 32, contrasts with Thanedar, a multimillionaire and two-time business Thanedar. McKinney's campaign described Thanedar as “Detroit's own Elon Musk”.
“I'm not running for Congress because I'm a millionaire or a billionaire,” McKinney said. “I'm running because I'm not. My campaign is because our community should have someone fighting the Trump-Muske administration, they know we're fighting for housing insecurity, not complying with the cost of living, environmental racism, etc. wages, and more – who have fought in these struggles and will fight for us, and the demand for this moment will fight for us.”

McKinney said in a written answer to NBC News’ questions that the Democrats are fighting for their “future and survival.”
“We have to be a party, we will adopt a handful of billionaires and corporate super PACs who use their influence and money to try to make record profits, rather than fighting for the economic security and stability of everyday people,” he said.
Thanedar, who represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, established a controversy in the Detroit area with neighboring Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib. After Thanedar criticized her use of the term “resistance” in a 2023 statement on Hamas’ attack on Israel, Trab told the Detroit News in a statement that Tedal was an absent member of Congress and failed to provide adequate voter services.
“When he was busy posting memes, his residents were calling my office for my help because he was absent from work,” Trab said. “He did not leave civil servant jobs without a real advocate, but rather the working-class community in his area.”
McKinney, in his statement, has previously served in the Democratic Party Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Environmental Justice Committee mentioned this concern.
“I’m running for Congress, so you never have to doubt whether your congressman is fighting for you in Washington,” he said. “You know I will — I’ll always answer the phone for our community, our kids, everyone.”
Thanedar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Michigan's District 13 is solid blue, with Thanedar winning the 2022 vote, with 68.6% of the vote last fall. But he never had an easy theme: He won the Democratic nomination last year with 54.9% of the votes in the three-point game. Prior to his first term, he won a Democratic nod in 2022 with 28.3% of the vote after nine games.
McKinney is the first major challenger to gain support from the Supreme Court Democratic Party since the 2022 election cycle. The Progressive Group was formed in 2017 to reshape the House Democratic caucus and maintain close ties with members of the “squad” of the center-left “squad” of Congress and spent the last election cycle trying to get rid of the challenges to the incumbent. Last year, the repetition at that time. D-Mo. Cori Bush and DN.Y.'s Jamaal Bowman lost the game as tensions emerged within the party.
Both McKinney and Justice Democrats framed the game as a struggle between working class and corporate interests. The first challenge is because of progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.
“The Democratic Party has been bored by the Democratic Party in the face of unprecedented attacks on our livelihoods and freedoms,” said Alexandra Rojas, executive director of the Judicial Democratic Party in a statement. “Donavan represents the future that the Democratic Party should strive for: working-class people take our power back from millionaires to serve everyday people. ”
