Hundreds of people were injured after a massive explosion and fire in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) south of the capital Tehran, officials and state media said.
Iran's state media held a “mass bombing” in Shahid Rajaei, the country's largest commercial port, on Saturday, located in the Hormozgan province on the southern coast of Iran.
According to state media reports, at least 516 people were injured. The injured were transferred to a nearby medical center.
Iran's state television said preliminary reports indicate the storage of flammable materials at the site, while the Tehran Times reported that explosions in several containers were the initial cause of the explosion.
Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, head of the provincial crisis management organization at Hormozgan, told the state television that the injury had been transferred to a medical facility.
He said security officials had previously visited the scene of the incident and issued a security warning.

Iran's National Petroleum Products Refining Company issued a statement after the explosion, saying that oil facilities in the region are not affected by the explosion.
“The explosion and fire at the Shahid Rajaei port have nothing to do with the refineries, fuel tanks, distribution complexes and oil pipelines associated with the company,” the company said.
Earlier, Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Administration official Esmaeil Malekizadeh said the explosion occurred near the Shahid Rajaei Port Dock.

Other videos show damage to buildings and vehicles. Several people were also seen around the area, who participated in the injured and examined the damage to the property.
The Shahid Rajaei port mainly handles container traffic and also has fuel tanks and other petrochemical facilities.
In May 2020, Israel was accused of launching a major cyber attack at the same port, causing traffic chaos a few days after crashing the facility’s computer system.
As Iranian officials continue to hold talks with U.S. officials on a possible new nuclear deal, the explosion took place in a sensitive period.
